How to disassemble your Lytro Camera (Part 1)

If you’d like to open and disassemble your Lytro LightField Camera – be it to fix a problem (we’d like to remind you of Lytro’s cheap repairs/replacement service at this point, though!) or to satiate your curiosity – you may have a hard time finding screws to undo.
There are screws to open the camera, you just need know where they are: They’re hidden beneath the cameras black plastic front cover around the lens, which is held in place by adhesive tape.

How to disassemble a Lytro Camera (Part 1)

Once you’ve removed this cover, you’ll find the four magnets that hold the lens cap on its backside. More interesting, though, are four little screws that potentially allow you to explore the camera’s inner life.

We’re not sure why, but the front plastic cover of our Lytro camera came off by itself recently. A strong magnet and a hot summer day may be enough to gently remove the cover, if you stay clear of the glass lens.

While our cover is off anyway, we’ll look for some fitting screw drivers. :)
We’ll keep you posted!

Important note: Please be aware that you can irreparably damage your camera when fiddling around! We can not take responsibility if anything goes wrong.

I would like to experiment with the Lytro optics with augmented lens for super macro applications…. Currently the lens are not optimized from macro work ie microscopy. ( Thanks Markus!)

Okay tonight I open up the camera and chicken out as I manage to pull the 4 screws out… the unit falls apart. I was going to pull the silver square metal below the screws.. but felt resistance and backed off… chicken out… waiting for part 2 :) Reassemble camera and it still works and I did not scratch the lens…
