First Moon Pictures from 4.25" diameter F4 Newtonian Telescope
on: 2013/01/21 02:54

Froze my fingers off tonight... trying to image the Moon for the First Time... I claim that this is the First Photo of a Moon shot through a Lytro camera... don't think anyone has succeeded in capturing an image of the moon from a Lytro camera interfaced to a Newtonian telescope yet till now... this is a first. Took over 160 pictures on a touch screen camera... fingers are frozen like it feels like -20C with the wind... stood outside for an hour but it was well worth it... testing some ideas about Lytro transfer lens systems... computer is still processing the images think it will take a while... so here is one pic....

Here are the Exported JPG note the refocus is all screwed up on the Lytro imaging software... locks up chronically on astrophotos...

very nice!
now if you were able to set that living picture (the one you posted last) to "out of focus", it would be cool to let the viewer discover the details on the moon!

Better pictures... 2.4X Dakin barlow and 4.25" F4 Newtonian scope similar to Edmund Astroscan:

Astrophoto of the Moon Taken Jan 24, 2013.

I took these pictures in the freezing cold -14C for 1 hr took 259 pictures of the moon my bare hands frozen!!!... wished there was a remote shutter release!

Great shot!
Now, if you could upload this specific picture so that it's out of focus in the beginning (e.g. click just above the moon), we'd love to feature it on LightField Forum! :)
If you have one, we'd also like to share a picture of the setup (i.e. Lytro camera interfaced with the telescope in the same way when as this picture was taken).

Telescope set up:

Scope, 2.4X Dakin barlow lens, special undisclosed transfer lens inside the camera adapter, Lytro Camera.

looks interesting, but i'd prefer the photo of the moon to be out of focus in the beginning, so that viewers can "explore" the picture. :) thanks!

Hi Markus: May not be possible but will try... there is not much play as the focal plane is so exact and the Lytro camera optics is unable to compensate with an out of focus object... will post image if successful.

If make the moon slightly out of focus... it remains so

Astro imaging with the Lytro is difficult....

In fact the majority of the images captured are fuzzy and yet the viewer on the Lytro show it as sharp but with picture is taken... remains fuzzy....
