Future of LF tech
on: 2012/10/19 20:27

Hi,

I'm a film maker and cinematographer.
I would love to see one day a full frame 100fps 4K global shutter plenoptic camera.
Does anone know when this would be possible?
Also is this technology being licensed to other manufacturers? e.g. for Red Epics it would be amazing.

What is the current situation with resolution? Last I heard constraints have been overcome so the camera can use the full resolution of what sensor it has.
And also, I heard that the camera is much more sensitive in lower light than a standard camera. Does anyone know by how much in stops?

Hi, and welcome to the LightField Forum!
We share your enthusiasm, and we're definitely seeing such a camera in the future. LightField technology is still in its infancy, though, so it will probably be a while.

As far as we know, Lytro is not currently licensing to other companies (but has seen tremendous interest from all fields). There are a small number of other LightField specialists out there, Raytrix being one of the most notable who are in the professional market. The company is planning to announce a Full-HD 30fps LightField video camera in the near future. That would be a step in the right direction.
As far as we know, effective resolution has been improved to 25 % of the sensor resolution.
Light sensitivity depends largely on the LightField setup, i.e. more microlenses mean that more sensor pixels will be used for one effective pixel >> better effective image quality.
