Q&A: Ordering a Lytro camera from overseas
on: 2012/08/30 16:44

Q: Hi! I am living outside of the U.S. and would like to order a Lytro camera, but I don't know how to get around the shipping etc.

A:
The following two articles show you how I did it:

4 ways to order a Lytro camera outside the United States (e.g. Europe)

Test Report: Ordering a Lytro LightField camera from Europe

Hope that helps!

It is my opinion that restricting the export of Lytro unit to non USA is a bit Draconian and you are definitely loosing potential sale. I ended getting my used from Ebay at a price equivalent to new. You should check out the pricing of Lytro on Ebay.... price is more than your new list prices...

There are clear signs that Lytro is working on international sales and shipping, and we're hoping it will be sooner than later. Still, it would definitely a big (and risky) first step for a young company to go international before even checking out the home market...

There are probably a lot of potential scientific researchers out there that are non US based that would benefit from this technology. I think I am one of the first to apply Lightfield technology imaging to paleontology.... with super macro applications.

This is definitely a great opportunity for scientists - especially considering the price difference between a Lytro (a few hundred Dollars) and a Raytrix LightField camera (in the thousands)!
I'm hoping for more manual controls, though, i.e. software refocus based on a slider, not click to focus.

I hope that the photokina this week in Germany will be a step forward to selling the Lytro in Europe. I also would like to use the Lytro for scientific purposes. And there is not only the price which prevents people to buy a Raytrix camera. One additional drawback is the fact that such cameras have to be connected to a computer to work. The Lytro can be taken as it is to take photographs. This is especially important if you have to take them somewhere outside in a "rough" surrounding. The drawback of the Lytro is of cause the quality of the lens system and the reduced number of depth zones (approximately 30 planes only) where the Raytrix cameras have over 200 planes. This probably makes it impossible to take several photographs of an object from all possible angles and then, after exporting the data files to obj files, combining and merging these files to a single three-dimensional file showing a complete three-dimensional view of the object. This could be done with the software DAVID-Laserscanner (free for low resolution files) or MeshLab (completely free). Probably, in the not so far future, both companies will come closer in price and equipment in that the parts for the Raytrix cameras will get cheaper and the components for the Lytro will become better and ths more expensive, raising the prize of cameras of that company. But then, most probably, both companies will sell cameras for professional use and within our financial limits.

I think the fact that they're presenting at photokina is a very strong indicator that Lytro is working hard on international options.
Also, I agree that standalone part is a very big advantage compared to tethered solutions. Raytrix also offers custom-fitted LightField technology for modified DSLRs etc., but the price for that is probably even higher.

Glad that Lytro has made the decision to ship internationally.
