Taking Lytro pictures through a microscope or telephoto lens
on: 2012/08/31 10:48

Given the correct optical parameters, i'm sure that it should be possible to take pictures through the eyepiece of a Microscope. However, a quick test (some time ago) was rather disappointing: http://lightfield-forum.com/2012/05/taking-living-pictures-through-a-microscope-first-attempt/

Did you try (and manage?) taking pictures through an additional lens system, e.g. a microscope, spotting scope or telephoto lens?

I want Lytro camera to have a M42 interface thread so it can take accessories ie my custom optics.

Peter, thanks for sharing! I see you get similar (yet less) artefacts around the corners of the picture.
I'm wondering whether it's possible to get pictures without vignetting that will effectively reproduce depth and give a good refocus effect.

Yes pictures without vignetting is possible under low magnification.

The Lytro lens has chromatic aberration purple fringe at higher magnifications....
I want to be able to image down to 10 microns and better.....

These pictures look quite good!
I'm also very intersted in truly microscopic photo subjects, i.e. plant cells and tissues, and think this might be solvable with a fitting adapter similar to this one:

I am a Biologist / Engineer by training and played with optics for over 30yrs as a hobby... My specialty is imaging microfossils.... But the Lightfield camera will solve the depth of field problems with high magnification microscopy... the lens on the existing Lytro... wish one had the option to remove all together. I had the same problem when exploring Sigma Foveon DP2 ... wish they could junked there lens system as they had zero optical zoom and therefore could not compensate in my optics system. Currently I can image down to 10 microns without a microscope with images sharper than conventional microscopes. Yes Markus your configuration above will work... I have gone beyond the above configurations.... bellows and projection tubes to magnify images with 35mm film lenses with superior flat field.
