[Breaking] Lytro Illum: Professional-grade Light Field Camera and Software

Breaking two years of silence in terms of products, Lytro has just unveiled a brand new light field camera: Lytro Illum is a professional-grade light field camera and software platform.

Here are the quick facts:
Lytro Illum boasts a 40 Megaray image sensor (no word yet about effective image size) and “tablet-class” processing power. On the optical side are an 8x zoom lens (30-250 mm equivalent) with constant f/2.0 aperture and 1:3 macro. In contrast to Lytro’s first-generation light field camera, Illum looks more like a traditional camera.

It is controlled using a 4 inch touchscreen display that tilts down, and hardware buttons and a jog dial. There’s even an external shutter release and a flash hot shoe, as well as a removable battery and SD card slot.

One of the highlighted features is a dedicated “Lytro Button” which provides interactive depth feedback in real time.

Lytro Illum is scheduled to ship in July 2014, and can now be pre-ordered for 1,499 USD with a 20 % loyalty discount for first-gen Lytro camera owners.

  1. Uhhhhh $1500??? looks like they’re taking a page from the Matterport/Andreessen Horowitz handbook…. sell inferior/obsolete technology for way more than its worth.
